Our house on Fitchburg Street in West Dallas was my first home. Light and heavy industrial areas surrounded Fitchburg Street. Portland Cement, where my father and uncles worked, was a 4-mile round trip that my dad walked each day.

My mother worked in the neighborhood grocery business most of the time I was growing up. Inside the grocery store I remember hearing all kinds of music; at the meat market it might be country music, in the storage rooms you would hear Mexican, blues and soul; around the cashier area the pop music of the day would be playing.

At home, my family loved to play records and dance. Uncle Lloyd, my mother's brother, played harmonica and often played with some of the big dance bands in Dallas. My twin brother Dale and I would sing at family gatherings.

Those early days were when I began to form my own musical style; a blend of all those sounds I heard on and around Fitchburg Street. Most of the songs I chose to cover for this album come from musicians who were major influences on me or are songs I've performed live for much of my career.

I was fortunate to have these great players join me in making this record; fortunate also to count them as my friends. We had a lot of fun.
